Description

The patriarchal state of Aquileia was one of the best organized polities of the Italian Middle Ages, having its own Parliament representing the communes as well as the nobility and the clergy. During the last decade, the land of the Friuli became a battleground between the Hungarians and the Venetians. It was finally conquered in 1420 and was ceded to the Domini di Terraferma. Under the Venetians, Friuli maintained some form of autonomy, by keeping the Parliament and an autonomy not granted to the other cities and provinces submitted to Venice (even Venetian ones). On the other side, it maintained also its feudal nobility, which was able to keep their feudal rights over the land and its inhabitants for some time.
