Description

Turkish subjection was long, hard, and grim. Non-Muslims were discriminated against in a variety of ways: from taxation and legislation to being forced to dismount when a Muslim crossed the road to the other side. The Turks saw no difference between Bulgarians and Turks, and treated us lightly. Able and strong children were taken away to the janissaries. Orthodox churches were in decline. In the mountains, haiduks began to appear, in whom the local population saw heroes. But then dawn came, and the Turks left our lands. Whatever the case, Bulgaria resurgences.
