Description

For centuries, Circassia was divided between princes and no organised structure was developed. In the early 1400s, Inal Nekhu moved to Circassia to unite it with his power. While Circassian lordships fell into Inal's hands one by one, he fought and defeated warlords and clan chieftains. A confederation of 30 Circassian clans tried to prevent Inal's rise, but in a decisive battle near the Mzymta River, he managed to defeat the combined army of thirty major feudal lords. Thanks to his conquests in the Kuban and Abkhazia, as well as his administrative and military changes, Inal was nicknamed the Great.

Description

Orthodoxy was spread among Circassians, but they did not abandon all elements of their indigenous religious beliefs, called Khabzeism. The prominent concepts of Khabzeism include honour (nape), manifestation of compassion (guschlegu), gratuitous help (psape), which were supposed to ensure that the human soul could join the soul of the ancestors with a clear conscience (nape huzhkle). Together with the Adyghe Khabze moral code, it was dominant in Circassia to the 18th century. Under the influence of Crimean Tatars and Turks, large numbers of Circassians converted to Islam from Christianity. This was facilitated by the destruction of Christian churches and the efforts of Ottoman imams and Sufi preachers. While the Circassian court and nobles were officially Sunni Muslims, most Circassians retained their beliefs.
