Description

After a heavy defeat from the Tatars at Vorskla in 1399, Vytautas temporarily gave up his plans for the crown and started to centralize Lithuania. Before that, the Grand Duchy was a conglomerate of several huge semi-independent princedoms and even greater number of smaller ones. Vytautas united almost all of them and created the system of the voivodships (districts) administrated by the voivodes/palatines (royal governors). The first palatinates were formed at the very heart of Lithuania with the centers in Vilna and Trakai. Several territories saved certain amount of autonomy (Polotsk, Vitebsk, Slutsk), but during the 15th-16th centuries they also were integrated into unitary Lithuanian state.

Description

Algirdas's brilliant military campaigns created Lithuania, which absorbed the lands of former Kievan Rus. The majority of the state's population was established by the Orthodox, including the assimilated Gediminid princes. Many lands were autonomous, and only religion united them. Jagiello, along with Catholicism, established a Lithuanian-led approach, which was confirmed by the favorable economic, political, and cultural domination of Lithuania Proper. Nevertheless, he respected the privileges of the Orthodox, which resulted in the well-known 'we shall neither disturb the old nor shall we introduce the new'. In fact, Lithuania and Rus' of that time were almost one and the same. The vicissitudes associated with the death of Vytautas and the return of Orthodox rulers pushed for the revival of the greatness of Kievan Rus. By taking Novgorod the Great, Pskov, and Tver under the wing of the Muscovites, Lithuania legitimized the continuity of Ruthenia. The ruler returned to abandoned Kyiv. But the independence of many feudal lords, the building of new economic ties, and the unfriendliness of neighbours cast doubt on Ruthenia's viability. It may break up into allodial lands, as it did several centuries ago. Or maybe it will change for the better...

Description

Having dealt with Zemaitija, Vytautas turned towards the Black Sea. There, the Grand Duke ordered the establishment of a network of defensive outposts along the coast and the Dniester and Bug rivers. That's how Khadzhibey, Dashiv, Mayaki and a dozen other settlements came into being. They could be safe as long as Lithuania used the authority of the khan of the Tuqa-Timurids of Crimea. After Vytautas' death, the outposts fell into decline, and the region itself soon fell into the hands of the Tatars and Ottomans.

Description

Vytautas's Lithuania was a tolerant place where Catholics, Orthodox, Jews and Muslims coexisted. The Tatars who came to Lithuania in search of peace and stability brought with them military training and gardening skills. Although some rebelled and others converted to Christianity, the influx of former nomads remained steady. The Karaites, a group of Jews from the Crimea, settled in Lithuania under privilege in Trakai dating back to the 1380s. They associated themselves with the military profession, probably serving as the Grand Duke's bodyguards. They professed an Eastern branch of Judaism that did not recognise the Talmud. The establishment of the Karaite community was the result of Vytautas' actions, for the most part determined by the Grand Duke's military interests. As time passed, the warcraft ceded its importance to trade and scholarly activity.

Description

The Hussites rightly saw the Poles and Lithuanians as their most likely supporters, if not allies. They shared a common unwillingness to be outsiders compared to other parts of Europe. Their dissatisfaction took the form of confrontation over the Germans. While Poland was limited to support from the nobility, Lithuania could offer an ambitious and experienced ruler. It played into the hands of the fact that the majority of the Lithuanian population were Orthodox, and Vytautas himself was rather a Catholic according to the Greek rite. In September 1421, the nobility of Bohemia and Moravia recognized him as the new king. Vytautas's envoys arrived in October, informing him that he would not be able to accept the crown. In effect, he played a double game. By sending Zygimantas Kaributaitis as the king's viceroy to Bohemia, he aimed to bring the lost Czechs back to the bosom of the Universal Church, preferably peacefully.

Description

The endless struggle between Lithuania and the Teutonic Order continued for about two centuries when on July 15, 1410 at the Battle of Grunwald (Tannenberg) the united Polish-Lithuanian army crushed the Teutonic knights. Since then the power of the Order was constantly declining. 1 February 1411 the Peace of Torun, as one of the gains of this great victory, was ratified. Lithuania received the formal control over Samogitia and the Order relinquished its claims until the death of King Jagiello and Grand Duke Vytautas. However, Vytautas did not leave his attempts to achieve full sovereign rights over Samogitia, and in early 1420s started active diplomatic correspondence with Emperor Sigismund and other European monarchs to prove his claims on the Duchy of Samogitia. Soon the new phase of negotiations started and resulted in the Treaty of Melno signed on September 27, 1422. The Teutonic Order recognized the sovereign rights of the Lithuanian Crown on Samogitia, while Lithuania renounced its claims on Memel (Klaipeda) and all territories of the Neman River mouth (Lithuanian Minor). Lithuania also received the port of Palanga and a narrow strip of land, separating the Teutonic and Livonian lands.

Description

In 1425 Vasily I, ruler of Muscovy, fostered his young son Vasily II with his father-in-law Vytautas, and soon died. Vytautas was still determined to win a Royal crown, but needed a visible success, which could be a proof of his strong position in Eastern Europe and thus strengthen his claims. His first objective was Pskov. In 1426 he invaded the republic and forced it to pay tribute. In 1427 Vytautas made the borderland between Lithuania and Muscovy, known as the Upper Oka principalities, subordinate to him. It was composed of many small states, which maintained their independence by maintaining tensions between Lithuania and Muscovy. An alternative route for Vytautas may have been to pay for Sigismund's help in his bid for the crown.

Description

Secretly backed by Jagiello, in 1429 Vytautas called a congress to city of Luck. Sigismund was invited too. Officially matters of discussion were Moldova, Hussites, and a Catholic synod. But in fact, the real issue was the title of King for Vytautas. The Polish embassy, led by chancellor Jan Szafraniec and Zbigniew Olesnicki, the bishop of Krakow, protested harshly. Olesnicki gained an offical statement from Pope Martin V forbidding Vytautas to accept the crown from the hands of Sigismund, on the pretext that the latter hadn't been crowned as Emperor. It was a forceful blow for Sigismund, whose animosity for Poland grew even stronger. The final blow came from Jagiello, who had been threatened by the Poles that the treaty of succession of the crown of Poland signed in 1425 would be revoked if Vytautas was coronated. Vytautas died on October 27, 1430, with no crown on his brow.

Vytautas died in October of 1430. Before his death, he admitted defeat and handed over the Grand Duchy of Lithuania to Jagiello. While Vytautas was being buried, Svitrigaila took over the castles in Lithuania propria. Few days later, the Lithuanian nobles has elected Jagiello's brother Svitrigaila as the new Grand Duke, and the Polish king himself accepted the choice post factum. However, they failed to get the approval of the Polish Sejm. Svitrigaila was a proponent of independent Lithuanian Kingdom, just like Vytautas was, and enjoyed the support of mainly Ruthenian nobles. He tried to persuade Jagiello to agree to be crowned King of Lithuania again, but the Sejm kept an eye on Jagiello, and did not let him meet with Svitrigaila.

Action B of 40206 - Zygmantas for Poland

Description

After an exchange of harsh words, the Polish army marched into Lithuania and besieged Lutsk. The Lithuanian army was unprepared for war and tried to get help from the Teutons. The siege ended unsuccessfully, and the parties declared a draw with a truce in Czartorysk. After the armistice, a congress was held in February 1432, which ended without result and only worsened relations. At the same time, Svitrigaila continued rapprochement with the Order, the Teutonic-Lithuanian alliance was adopted in May, and efforts were made to bring Mazovia, Moldavia, and Livonia into the coalition, as well as Khan Ulugh Muhammad. Realising the threat, the Polish Sejm decided to create an alternative Duke in the face of Zygmantas, brother of Vytautas. Supported by the Polish king, part of Svitrigaila's entourage attacked him, probably because of his radical anti-Polish views. Zygmantas immediately recognised the Polish king as his suzerain, an act which cost him the support of many Lithuanian nobles. Svitrigaila himself fled to Polotsk, where he began to gather forces to fight for the throne.

Description

According to the previous privileges granted by Grand Dukes Jagiello and Vytautas, the Catholic nobility enjoyed much higher privileges than the Orthodox. However, during the civil war, in order to win the support of the Ruthenian nobles who mainly backed Svitrigaila, on 6 May 1434 Grand Duke Zygimantas declared the privilege for the Orthodox nobility equalising them in private and property rights with the Catholics.Restrictions on political rights remained. This was a repetition of the privilege of 1432, issued in the name of Jogailo, which did not enter into force. This action of Zygimantas strengthened the position of the nobility in Lithuania by increasing the scope of their powers.

Description

Attempts to negotiate a reunion between the Eastern and Western Churches of Lithuania date back to the time of Vytautas. On 15 November 1415, the synod of the Orthodox Church in Navahradak elected Bulgarian Gregory Tsamblak as a new metropolitan. Lacking support from Constantinople, Metropolitan Gregory began to focus on Rome. At the Council of Constance, he proposed the idea of a dialogue between the churches. The topic of the union returned at the Council of Basel, which suggested that the pope should appeal to the Polish king and the Lithuanian prince. In March 1433, Svitrigaila sent a declaration to the council confirming his plans for unification, and then wrote a letter to the pope. Having dissolved the Council of Basel, Eugene IV convened his own in Ferrara (later in Florence), which was to discuss the church union. Isidore, Metropolitan of Kyiv went to the council. When the act of reunification of Churches was approved, and Svitrigaila was confirmed as Grand Duke, the time had come. From Florence, Isidore arrived in Lithuania, where he first proclaimed the union of the chuches in Vilnius and then in St. Sophia Cathedral in Kyiv. Well-received Svitrigaila arrived here and convened a council of the Lithuanian church. As a result, the Kyivan Metropolis came under the control of the Catholic Church while saving local church hierarchy and Byzantine rite. After the council, Isidore went to unwelcoming Moscow.

Description

Due to his decision to become effectively a Polish vassal, Zygmantas had next to nothing support among the nobility. The Grand Duke had sought an alliance with the Austrians and Teutons to wage war against the Poles, but his aspirations faded after the death of Albrecht II. On Palm Sunday, two Ruthenian nobles, the Chartoryskis brothers, killed Zygmantas in his Trakai castle, and began the second phase of instability in Lithuania. The candidates to take over the throne were Mykolas (son of Zygimont), Svitrigaila and Wladyslaw III of Poland. The latter was elected king of Hungary, and was unable to travel to Lithuania, and the Polish Sejm decided to send Wladyslaw's brother, Prince Kazimieras, as a formal Polish viceroy of Lithuania. Description

In 1404-1405 Grand Duke Vytautas annexed the princedom of Smolensk to Lithuania. Smolensk was an influential East European trading center and a stronghold of great strategic importance. During the period of instability in March 1440 the lower classes of Smolensk society (the craftsmen, journeymen, peasants, beggars etc) revolted against the Lithuanian authority. Part of the Smolensk boyars and Lithuanian administration fled from the city, the rest (who were not so lucky) were killed by the furious crowd. The boyars asked for the help of the Lithuanian army to suppress the uprising, while the leaders of the rebels invited Prince Yuri Lugveniyevich of Mstislavl to rule in Smolensk. Prince Yuri organized resistance against the Lithuanians in November 1440 and managed to beat them off. However, in 1441 the uprising was finally stifled and the Lithuanian rule restored in the city.

Description

5 May 1447 Grand Duke Kazimieras was also elected King of Poland restoring the personal union between Poland and Lithuania. However, in order to strengthen his unsteady position in Lithuania he had to reconfirm the privileges of the Grand Duchy's nobility. Since 25 June when he was crowned as the Polish King he had been paying less and less attention to his ancestors' ancient eastern dominion. The Lithuanian aristocrats felt the absence of their ruler and a lot of them started to dream about the Grand Ducal crown for themselves. Thus in 1456 Lithuanian nobles guided by Jan Gostautas, palatine of Vilna, conspired against Grand Duke Kazimieras with the purpose to dethrone him. The plot did not succeed, but clearly showed that after the years of instability the Royal positions in Lithuania still were not stable enough.

Description

In the XIV century the Orthodox Church of Lithuania was subjected to the Metropolitans of Moscow who continued to call themselves 'the Metropolitans of Kiev'. Since the XIV century several attempts to make Orthodox Church of Lithuania independent form Moscow influence were undertook by the Grand Dukes. This resulted in creation of the Metropoly of Kiev and All Russia with the center in Vilna and the metropolitan residence in Navahradak that subjected directly to Patriarch in Constantinople. In 15 November 1415, the synod of Orthodox Church in Navahradak elected Bulgarian Gregory Tsamblak as a new metropolitan. The same day Grand Duke Vytautas announced the separation of Kievan metropoly from the jurisdiction of Moscow and recognized Gregory Tsamblak as its new head. However already in 1420 Vytautas concluded an agreement with Moscow metropolitan Fotiy who promised not to interfere into the politics of Lithuania. In return Fotiy was again recognized as a single metropolitan of Kiev and Moscow. This question aroused again in 1458 when Grand Duke Kazimieras announced about the separation of Kievan metropoly from Moscow and appointed Gregory Bulgarin new metropolitan of Kiev. This finally made the Orthodox Church of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania independent structure.

Description

During 1460-1470s Grand Duke Kazimieras undertook important reforms to centralize and stabilize Lithuania. He had an idea to systematize the laws of the Grand Duchy into one common unified code of laws. The work was finally finished and 29 February 1468 in Vilna the new Code of Laws (Sudziebnik) was enacted by Kazimieras at the assembly of the Lithuanian Rada (Council). It consisted of 25 articles which systematized legal regulations concerning the punishments for crimes (the basis of the Lithuanian criminal law) as well as the several norms of civil law. The Kazimieras' Code of Laws initiated important process of the Lithuanian law codification. Also it became a classical example for the Grand Duchy's neighbors: Ivan III, Grand Prince of Muscovy, worked out his own Sudebnik per Lithuanian sample in 1497.

Description

Kiev was incorporated into Lithuania by Grand Duke Algirdas in autumn 1362. Since then it was ruled as an autonomous princedom. This often caused conflicts with Royal authority and Grand Duke Kazimierasas decided to put an end to this situation. After Semen Olelkovich, Prince of Kiev, died 3 December 1470 and left his throne vacant Kazimierasas refused to accept Semen's brother and successor Mikhail Olelkovich, Prince of Slutsk and Kopyl, as new ruler of Kiev. Instead the Grand Duke transformed the Kievan princedom into simple district (voivodship) and appointed Martin Gostautas to administrate it. Despite the fact that this helped to strengthen the Royal power, this also made the powerful Ruthenian House of Olelkovich enemies of Kazimierasas.

Traditionally Lithuania was a unique state for its high tolerance to all ethnic and religious communities settling within its borders. Among the multinational and multireligious population of the Grand Duchy the Jews represented a very large community. They were employed in commercial affairs such as usury, maintaining taverns, houses etc. There was a common practice that the Jews were lending high sums to the monarchs and the court in Lithuania. This resulted in fantastic debts of Grand Duke Alaksandaras and his flamboyant courtiers that made them almost bankrupt. Alaksandaras decided to follow the example of the Spanish monarchy and using increasing anti-Jewish sentiments signed the edict of expulsion of all Jews from his dominions. All jewish prosperities were confiscated by the Crown.

Description

Before the coronation Alaksandar I as the Polish King also enacted Mielnik privilege both for his Polish and Lithuanian dominions, which increased the influence of the aristocracy in the state affairs. However, instead of the ordinary nobles (szlachta) it favored the power aristocrats (magnates) as the main functions of the state authority were transferred to the Senate (instead of the Sejm), which was headed by the monarch. At the time when it did not change anything for Lithuania, where the power traditionally was in the hands of the most influential aristocrats, which in practice ruled the country through the Council of Nobles (the Pany-Rada), in Poland it provoked great struggle between the szlachta and the magnates. The perspective to base his power on the authoritative magnates did not please the monarch in fact, and later he supported the szlachta in their struggle for power, which opened the road to the increasing of the Sejm's role both in Poland, and in lesser way in Lithuania.

It also restricted the power of the governmental officials and the Senate. The King still held the power to call the Sejm. In Lithuania the szlachta also enacted the Constitution of Radom in order to limit the power of the magnates.

Description

Michal Glinski was a powerful Lithuanian prince of distant Tatar origin. In his youth he was brought to the court of Emperor Maximilian where he converted to Roman Catholicism. In the 1490s he returned to Lithuania and he assumed very powerful position at the court of Grand Duke Alaksandras I. His secret ambition was to create his own independent state composed of Ruthenian lands. This intention was made public by his rival Janusz Zabrzezinski, palatine of Trakai. After accession to the throne new monarch Zygmantas II decided to deprive disloyal nobleman from all his offices. In response Glinski procured Zabrzezinski's assassination and stirred up armed rebellion against the monarch. The rebel army took control of several towns in Eastern Polesia and with the help of the Muscovites besieged Slutsk and Minsk. However, soon royal armies crushed the rebellion. Glinski fled to Muscovy, where Grand Duke Vasily III made him a boyar and even later married his niece, Elena Glinskaya. This provoked new open rivalry between Muscovy and Lithuania in 1512-1522. Glinski still hoped that Vasily would make him a vassal prince. Upon realizing that this would never be done he entered into secret negotiations with Zygmantas II the Old in order to return to Lithuania. The conspiracy was discovered and Michal was imprisoned. Upon Vasily's death in 1533 Elena became the regent of Muscovy for her son Tsar Ivan IV. She libirated her uncle from prison and made him her counselor and Ivan's tutor. But Glinski, jealous of the influence acquired on Elena by her lover Prince Obolensky, started to conspire against them. In August 1534 he was again taken into prison where 24 September he finally died.

Description

Francysk Skaryna was famous as one of the first publishers in Eastern Europe, laying groundwork for the development of the Ruthenian language. He was born in the city of Polotsk in 1490. Most probably Skaryna was initially educated by the Franciscans who since 1498 had their convent in Polotsk. Skaryna graduated from the arts faculty at the University of Krakow in 1506 with a Bachelor of Arts and in 1512 he received doctorate of medicine at the Italian University of Padua. Little is known about Skaryna's life from 1512 to 1517, but it is surmised that he devoted the years to the study of the techniques of printing and engraving, possibly in Venice, Nuremberg and Augsburg. He must also have begun to prepare his monumental work, the translation of the Bible to Ruthenian. Skaryna printed his first book entitled The Psalter in Ruthenian (Old Belarusian) language on August 6, 1517 in Prague, this work was followed by another twenty-three books printed in Bohemia. He continued his publishng work later in Vilna, where he founded the first printing house in Lithuania. Here in 1525-1527 he published The Acts of the Apostles, The Epistles, and a collection of prayers entitled Malaya Padarozhnaya Knizhica (The Little Itinerary Book). After that date his life seems to have been somewhat unsettled. Later he served as court physician to Duke Albrecht of Prussia in Kцnigsberg. Then Skaryna was employed as private secretary and physician by the Catholic Bishop of Vilna. By 1535 he went back to Prague where he found employment as a royal gardener in the botanical garden newly established in Hradcany castle by King Ferdinand I of Bohemia. There he died about the year 1551.

Description

In 1523 the famous Lithuanian poet-Latinist and humanist Nicolai Hussoviani (Mikola Husouski) published his poem Carmen de Bisontis (The Song about the Bison). This masterpiece of the Lithuanian Renaissance poetry was first written by Hussoviani in 1522 during his mission as the secretary of the Grand Ducal embassy in Rome and dedicated specially to Pope Leo X. However, a year later, in October 1523 Hussoviani edited and published it as the new 11 collected poems and 'Carmen de Bisontis' with the prosaic dedication to Queen Bona Sforza. The poem berhymes the beauty of the Lithuanian lands, its nature, history and people. The special place in his poem given to Grand Duke Vytautas, whose rule he considered a golden age of Lithuania. During the first half of the 16th century the Lithuanian Renaissance Latin literature became well-known in Europe with the numerous authentic works of such persons as Jan Vislicki, Andrej Rymsza, Jan Radvan, Elias Pielgrymouski, Michalonis Litvani and others.

Description

Bona Sforza was a member of the Milanese Sforza dynasty, daughter of Duke Gian Galeazzo II Maria and Isabella of Aragon. Her dynastical ties, claims and Italian possessions made her a very tempting candidature for a bride. In 1518 young Bona married Sigismund the Old, King of Poland and Grand Duke of Lithuania. Together with her husband, known Humanist and philanthropic prince, Grand Duchess Bona became the great patron of art supporting the development of the Renaissance culture in Lithuania. Grand Duke Sigismund the Old and his Italian consort preferred to stay in the Lower Castle of Vilna (Vilnius) with the wonderful court circle of the musicians, poets and artists. Bona is also considered one of the mothers of modern Polish and Lithuanian cuisines since she became famous for introducing Italian vegetables to the court and nobles tables. In her Lithuanian manors the Grand Duchess started to use European agricultural innovations, including the new falvarak (farms) system. Thanks to her a lot of Lithuanian towns were granted the Magdeburg city rights.

This supposed to increase the controllability and incomes of the Grand Ducal lands. First such charter was given to the royal manors of Vilna and Trakai voivodships in 1507 and later reworked in 1529. Such instructions were also signed for the Samogitian duchy. In the mid-16th century, a legend emerged about Palemon, a relative of the Roman Emperor Nero, who escaped Rome together with 500 noble families. They moved to the territory of Lithuania Proper and founded their own state. The Palemonid, Centaur and Colon dynasties ruled these lands until the arrival of the Gediminids. The nobility also proclaimed Roman continuity, while reinforcing their legitimacy. The Gostautai, the Alseniskiai, the Radvilos and other noble houses used the Roman origins.

While the former were considered schismatics who opposed the abuses of the church, the latter were openly proselytising Jews. Close contact with the West led to a movement for church reform. Popularly nicknamed the Neo-Strigolniks, they preached worldly, calling for a life strictly according to the Bible. They spoke out against wealth and excess, quoted the Holy Scripture, and established church communities. Not surprisingly, the Neo-Strigolniks were persecuted by the Orthodox.

Reform knows as 'ustavy na voloky' was introduced in 1557 and implemented during 1560s. The reform established the first official land registry. All the peasants' land was collected and divided into more equal tracts, which averaged 20 hectares. Free peasants received one voloka, and the folwark received seven. Description

The Grand Duchy of Lithuania, like many of the European countries, was very involved in Reformation religious renewal. The Evangelical teachings were rapidly spreading in the country. What contributed a lot to this process were the Bibles printed by Francysk Skaryna in Ruthenian language in early 16th century and the fact that many Lithuanians were studying in the Protestant universities of Prague, Wittenberg, Konigsberg, Leipzig. In 1553 duke Mikolaj Radziwill 'the Black', Chancellor of Lithuania and Voivode of Vilna, one of the most influential magnates of the country, had publicly confessed being an evangelical believer. The same year, he founded Calvinistic Churches (they were called 'zbory', or 'gatherings' at that time) in Vilna and Brest, where people gathered to hear God's Word preached. At the same time Radziwill printed the Catechism of Evangelical Faith at his own expense. Mikolai Radziwill 'the Black' was not alone in his pursuit of Protestantism.

In the course of several years the most influential families of Lithuania (the Wollowiczes, the Hlebowiczes, the Sapiehas, the Oginskis, the Chodkiewiczes and many others) numbered among the Evangelical Christians. They opened new Reformed churches, invited pastors and preachers, started schools and opened printing-houses. The books of the Holy Scripture were translated, books and textbooks for schools and catechisms for churches were printed due to their efforts. The Grand Duchy was rapidly becoming an Evangelical country. At the time when the Habsburgs began to rule Lithuania, the Senate of the Grand Duchy had only seven people who were not Evangelical believers. A lot of Orthodox believers also accepted new faith. In the voivodship of Navahradak out of 600 families of the Orthodox gentry more than 580 embraced the evangelical faith. In fact, the Reformation did not affect only the left-bank Ukraine and the territories bordering Russia.

The spread of the Reformation couldn't but influence all the areas of the country's life. The failing Catholic Church of Lithuania at its synods (1538, 1542, 1546) tried to undertake the acts against the Reformation but their attempts failed completely. The Royal authority in a person of Grand Duke announced a principle of non-intervention into religious affairs. The peculiarities of the Habsburg lands, where up to half of the population of Austria was Protestant, and in Hungary number of Protestants reached 90%, allowed them to tolerate the Reformation in Lithuania.

Description

Social and economic changes and a step-by-step reformation raised the question of revising the Lithuanian Statute. The Law reform commission was convened in 1563, and the Second Lithuanian Statute was approved in 1566. It was more systematic and considerably expanded, and its reliance on Roman law was increased. The statute confirmed the power of the Sejm and also introduced elected noblemen's courts.

Description

On 1st July 1569 the joint force of Lithuanian and Polish Magnates as well as the Sejms of these countries met at Lublin on the border of their realms and unanimously swore a new Act of Union. There would now exist one united Sejm convening in Warszawa and the country would have one King not only de facto but de jure. The Grand Duchy was to keep its old laws, a separate treasury and its own army under its own Grand Hetman and Field-Hetman. Effectively the Union was a marriage of two partners, with only the slightest hint of the dominant position of Poland. The combined Kingdom now formally became, Serenissima Republica Polonie. However there was some Lithuanian opposition before 1st July... Mikolaj the Black, the head of the mighty Radziwill family had long dreamed to of detaching the Grand Duchy from the domination and recreate a Lithuania with him as King. The first steps were taken in the 1540's when Mikolaj approached the Habsburg Emperor who was very interested in seeing a weakened Poland on her borders. This lead to Mikolaj receiving the title Prince of the Holy Roman Empire in 1547. In the end Mikolaj never raised the Banner of Independence. This had many causes, but one important one was the fear of standing alone against the oncoming Russian Hordes. But what if he had tried?

Description

The discord that arose within the Lithuanian delegation allowed Zygimont August to issue the universals for the annexation of Podlasie and Volhynia, and later Kiev, to the Polish Crown. The Poles argued that Ruthenia had long belonged to the Crown. Such actions forced the Lithuanians to return to Lublin to the negotiating table.

Action A, B, C of 210019 - Strategic Axis with Austria for Lithuania

Description

Before the Independence in 1569 Mikolaj the Black, named King as Mikolaj I, had become Prince of the Holy Roman Empire and befriended the Habsburg ruler of Austria, the Emperor Maximilian II. Maximilian was as sharp a politician as Mikolaj and profited on weakening Poland. Now Mikolaj's position was very bad in the 1570's he had to fight broad factions of Magnates in what could be described as a Civil War and fend his borders from Polish acts of revenge or even a re-conquest. He had to do what served independence best and that was to strike a deal with Maximilian. A Military Alliance was signed on 3rd February 1570 and Mikolaj's eldest son married Elizabeth of Steirmark. This alliance actually kept Poland from attacking even if local border incursions were regular. With the ascending of Rudolf to the Habsburg Monarchy the relations became wary and the alliance fell, but at that time the relations with Poland was at least acceptable.

Konstanty Wasyl Ostrogski was a representative of the most influential princely family in Ruthenia. After the struggle for his father's legacy, which ended in 1574, Ostrogski received extensive estates in Volhynia, Kiev, Podolia, and Galicia. Ostrogski invested heavily in the development of these lands, especially in Ostroh, which was called 'Volyn Athens' because of its cultural importance among Orthodox. In Ostroh in 1576 an academy began to operate, which became the first such institution in Ukraine. Here Ostrogski sheltered Ivan Fyodorov, who published the first complete text of the Bible in Church Slavonic. Ostrogski also was a voivode of Kiev Voivodeship and an active public figure.

The Lithuanian Supreme Tribune was the highest court of appeal for the nobility of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. It was organized in 1580 on the model of Polish and Austrian courts. Each powiat annually appointed two representatives to the Tribunal. In 1588, Zemaitija came under the jurisdiction of the Tribunal and elected three representatives. The decisions were made by majority and were considered final, i.e. equivalent to the decisions of ordinary courts. The establishment of the Tribunal established separation of powers in the state, but its decisions were ignored by the nobility, primarily due to the lack of an executive service.

In XVI and XVII century Ukraine was a very specific place. Polish and Lithuanian law was not respected here. Social and ethnic composition of the Cossacks from the beginning was very different. Starting from the inhabitants of Ukrainian cities, including deserters and adventurers differs from the territory of Ukraine, the Grand Duchy of Moscow, Poland, Lithuania, Moldavia, Wallachia and Crimea. Here you could meet runaway peasants, adventurers, but also the outlaw gentry and sometimes even magnates. All attempts to subordinate these areas to the royal power had failed. After the arrival of the Habsburgs, the Lithuanian Status needed to be adjusted. The third statute was adopted in 1588 under the leadership of Chancellor Ostafiusz Volowicz and Vice Chancellor Lev Sapieha. The status consisted of 14 chapters. In this edition many Austrian concepts were introduced into the criminal and civil law, which were systematized anew. For the first time, it established a unified code of laws for the entire Lithuanian state and the entire population, in this respect it differed from the earlier editions, which were collections of local laws. It guaranteed land ownership and personal liberty of gentry. Given the small difference, the second and third statuses were applied in parallel for some time.

Mikalojus Dauksa is considered one of the founders of Lithuanian literature. He was born between 1527 and 1538 in Babenai. He probably studied at a university in Western Europe. He held various church positions in Zemaitija and was a counter-reformation activist. In 1595, he translated the Jesuit Jacobo Ledesma's catechism from Polish. It was also the first book in Lithuanian to be printed in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Another important work was the translation of sermons by Jakub Wujek, the Catholic Postil. In his preface, Mikalojus describes the concept of Lithuanian state and cultural sovereignty, glorifies the mother tongue, emphasises its importance for the unity and survival of the nation, the independence of the state, and the spread of Catholic ideas. Mikalojus knew Lithuanian, Polish, and Latin, and had an impressive library.

Description

The Reformation in Lithuania also affected the Greek faith. A significant number of Ruthenian nobles converted to Protestantism in order to increase their role in society. The nobility appointed clergy and converted churches to the Calvinist system. Some parishes adopted the reformed Greek liturgy. The Orthodox and Greek Catholics also took advantage of the novelties of the reform. Their sermons became more vital, and in large cities, brotherhoods, cultural and religious public organisations, were established. It was at this time that the Gospel was published in the Ruthenian language, bringing the church closer to the people. Close communication between Protestants and Orthodox allowed them to discuss theological issues and find a solution to the controversy with Catholics. Some Protestant supporters wanted the Orthodox to recognise their authority and vice versa, but this was rejected. In 1599, a confederation was concluded in Vilnius, which was approved by the state.

Description

The idea of a church union of Orthodox and Catholics did not initially satisfy a significant number of supporters of the Greek faith. Reformation processes in the church contributed to this. The sermons of the clergy became more vital, and in large cities, brotherhoods, cultural and religious public organizations were established. It was at this time that the Gospel was published in the Ruthenian language, bringing the church closer to the people. When the Orthodox lost state support, they found Calvinists among their allies. Close communication between them allowed them to discuss theological issues and find a solution to the controversy with Catholics. Some Protestant supporters wanted the Orthodox to recognize their authority and vice versa, but this was rejected. In 1599, a confederation was concluded in Vilnius, which was approved by the state. From among the authoritative members of the confederation, 120 trustees were elected, including a council of "general pharmacists" authorized to monitor the course of events and, if necessary, mobilize the forces of all religious brotherhoods. They included representatives of princely families, the Grand Marshal of Lithuania, voivodes, and castellans.

Sophia adopted Austrian and Polish influences, making Rus' more enlightened in its perception of the West. But more importantly, medieval and obsolescent forms of government gave way to a traditional monarchy. The Pany-Rada was reformed, becoming a full-fledged executive body. The army and the system of administration were also brought to the Western model. Even though there was strong resistance, the ties between Rus' and Europe were being tightened by Sofia's hands.

The Roman origin was highly respected by them. But a new generation is coming, with its own customs and worldview. Most of them believe in the myth that they are descendants of an ancient nomadic people called Sarmatians. Lush costumes, bravery, and pride are their constant companions. In the first decades of the 17th century Lithuania's King had converted to Protestantism and started to support the two branches of the Reformation. All in all his ideal was an effective and modern monarchy much inspired by the Swedish Kings. Building up a Protestant Church of Lithuania and getting inspiration for governmental and societal reforms the King turned to Sweden. The cooperation was of mutual benefits as Sweden soon got a protestant friend in otherwise heretic Eastern Europe. Slowly the friendship brought a strong alliance about and King Ladislovas I eagerly encourage Gustav II Adolphus to the Protestantism in Germany. He himself would hold the Catholics and orthodox of the East in check.

Description

In the second decade of the 17th century Brandenburg inherited the Duchy of Prussia. Brandenburg-Prussia was a protestant state with high tolerance versus reformed and she approached Jerzy I with an offer. Lithuania and Brandenburg should sign a Holy Protestant Alliance and wage war on Poland. Brandenburg would be freed from her Prussian vassalage by Poland and Lithuania would whatever she wanted and could take from Poland. A faction of young governmental official cherished it, but the King was a very careful man. He and his closest advisors discussed. There conclusion was very plain. First it was an impossibility to support Germans against Poland in a war of aggression. Secondly the worst possible thing was total victory. If Lithuania took a mile of Polish land it would be a mile too much. Any conquests would include more Catholics and orthodox and worse more unruly magnates brought up in the Polish Anarchy of a country. So the King politely declined the honor, but instead he proposed a tract of trade and cultural exchange. However as most political well informed Lithuanian could have guessed it did not come much out of it. The Society of Brandenburg-Prussia had far more in common with Poland than with Lithuania. Lithuanian preferred to visit Stockholm, Copenhagen and Amsterdam too Berlin or Kцningsberg.

The civil turbulences in Britain during 1630s-1640s forced thousands of the Scotsmen to flee and find their new homes in Eastern Europe. Many of them: merchants, soldiers, officers, doctors, Protestant priests and teachers - settled in Lithuania, especially in Vilnius. A Scots Pedlars Pack, which usually consisted of woolen goods and linen kerchiefs, became a well known phrase in Lithuania and Poland. These poorer traders developed a bit of a reputation for drunkenness, so, in other words, they fit right in. Also large Scottish community allured to Lithuania by duke Krzysztof Radziwill who had issued a charter and invited everybody to come to his town of Kedainiai. Thus many Scots came, built houses and opened shops there. During this period they've made almost half of the population of this town.

In the 17th century, unlike Poland, where the Counter-Reformation was tangible, Lithuania recognised the existence of Calvinists. But even here the situation changed in favour of Catholics. In September 1639, at the christening of a Calvinist minister in Vilnius, guests dared to shoot arrows at St Michael's Church. A commotion broke out among the faithful. The case was considered at the Sejm, where the commissioners decided to destroy the church in this place. Nevertheless, King Wladyslaw IV, thanks to the efforts of Krystof Radziwill, agreed to move the Calvinist church outside the city walls, which was quickly done.

Kazimierz Siemienowicz (1600-1651) was born in a poor noble family with military service traditions. After education he joined Lithuanian army as a professional soldier and earned fame of an excellent engineer. In 1644 he moved to Netherlands to continue his studies and served in the army of duke of Orange. In 1646 Habsburg King recalled him to Lithuania and appointed as a high-rank officer in Royal Artillery Corps where he spent three years reforming Lithuanian artillery and fortifications. Siemienowicz's main work was Artis Magnae Artilleriae, (The Complete Art of Artillery), which became main artillery manual throughout Europe for two centuries. In his book Siemienowicz revealed his revolutionary ideas on metallurgy, ballistics, gunpowder, fireballs and various pyrotechnic devices. Book contains also a chapter on rockets designed for both civil and military purposes including multistage rockets, rocket batteries and rockets with delta wing stabilizers. This makes Siemienowicz one of European pioneers of rocketry.

Action B of 3418 - Nikons Reform and the Raskolniks for Russia

Description

Opponents of the ecclesiastical reforms of Patriarch Nikon of Moscow emerged among all strata of the people and in relatively large numbers in Russia and were called Old Believers. They fiercely rejected all innovations, and the most radical among them maintained that the official Church had fallen into the hands of the Antichrist. The state church anathematized both the old rites and books and those who wished to stay loyal to them at the synod of 1666. From that moment, the Old Believers officially lacked all civil rights? The State had the most active Old Believers arrested, and executed several of them (including Archpriest Avvakum) some years later in 1682, and continued to persecute them almost constantly. After 1685, a period of persecutions began, including both torture and executions. Many Old Believers fled Russia altogether, particularly for the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and Courland, where the community exists to this day.

Description

European society of the time was closely tied together by faith, so any manifestation of atheism was severely suppressed. Kazimierz Lyszczynski was a middle-class nobleman who studied and later joined the Jesuit order. He soon left it to get married and return to his estate. There he proved himself as a warrior and a member of the Sejm. As it turned out, Lyszczynski had been secretly writing De non existentia Dei (On the Non-Existence of God) since 1674. It was the first Polish philosophical treatise to examine religion from the point of view of an atheist. Its existence became known when a debtor of Lyszczynski's pointed him out as an atheist. He was arrested and brought to a church court in Vilnius. As a result of a six-month trial by the Rada Commission, Kazimierz Lyszczynski was initially sentenced to be burned at the stake, but the king changed it to beheading. The execution was carried out on March 30, 1689, before which the treatise was burned. After the execution, his body was taken outside the city walls and burned, and his ashes were shot from a cannon.

They thought it as a good opportunity for revenge and to cut that major power to pieces. The Lithuanians which always had a good relation towards Sweden since the days of Gustav II Adolphus was approached by the Swedes. The Swedes wanted Lithuania to join in an Anti-Russian alliance for the good of both their countries. The King, Karol I Stanislovas, a fine general and knower of men immediately like Charles XII's character and his habit of getting to the point very fast. The King was though hesitant. Lithuania was a vast country and in-between Poland and Russia. It would be a hard task and the Swedes would most certainly be occupied with the Danes first. But against the advice of his most trustworthy advisors he signed the Pact knowing that Lithuanian would have to fight this fight sooner or later, and as he said 'I rather do it with a noble intention'.

Pietism was a religious movement that started in Germany during the latter part of the 17th century. Traditionally, the Pietist movement has been viewed as a backlash against intellectualism prevalent in and among the Protestant ranks, especially in the Lutheran Church during that period. However, Pietism was regular also within the other Christian forms. It was with the return of prisoners of war that the movement really took off in Lithuania. However, the Lithuanian Church disapproved most strongly of unauthorized preaching, which led to the Conventicle Edict of 1729, forbidding any religious gatherings outside the framework of the Church.

Born in 1705, Franciska Ursula Wyszniewiecka was the last member of the family and the heiress to a large fortune. Her parents, Janusz Antony and Teofil, provided her with a decent home education. Having inherited a literary talent, Franciska was fond of classical literature, knew several languages, and wrote poetry. In 1725, Franciska Ursula married Michal Kazimierz Radziwill, who fell in love with her without a second thought and reciprocated. In 1746-1752, she organised theatre performances at the family residence in Niasvizh. Her plays were staged there or, like Moliиre's three comedies, translated and edited by her. In good weather, performances could be held in the open air. The stage setting was mostly in the Baroque style, inspired by Italian theatre, with prepared music and choreography, and each performance ended with a ballet. Franciska Ursula set up a printing house in Niasvizh and expanded the Radziwill library. It is said that she read all the books in it. After her death, her dramatic works were collected and published by one of the Niasvizh actors.

Johann Christoph Glaubitz is considered to be one of the most famous names in the architecture of Lithuania of the 18th century and one of the founders of the so-called 'Vilnius Baroque'. He arrived in Vilnius at the invitation of the parish of the evangelical Lutherans and stayed for a long time. Following the great fires of Vilnius, Johann Christoph Glaubitz had sufficient space to create original structures. He participated in the construction and reconstruction of many churches, including St. Catherine's Church and St. John's Church. The buildings designed by Glaubitz have a single dynamic composition, longitudinal proportions, the walls are divided by pilasters and columns, and they are characterised by broken cornices and the cut contours of pediments and arches. The facades are decorated with ornamental mouldings, expressive sculptures, decorative vases and metal grilles. Death struck the architect at work during an inspection of a bricklayer's work – he fell off a scaffold and died.

Regulations proposed by Michal Kazimierz Radziwill provide for the introduction of the uniform and uniformed arms for the Husaria and Petyhoria in Lithuania. This will require greater professionalisation of the army.

Description

Paulava Republic was a small self-governing farming community founded in 1769 by the Catholic priest and publicist Pawel Ksawery Brzostowski. Covering an area of 6.3 square miles, it became an area of radical transformation in the spirit of the Enlightenment. Peasants were free from serfdom, had personal freedom and property. The country had its own money, an army of 150 men, a president, a peasant parliament and even a constitution. Within 25 years of its existence, the income of the manor more than doubled as the peasants became more willing and productive by giving them the freedom to manage themselves, to earn an income and to educate themselves. Not surprisingly, it became a model for other farms in Lithuania.

Western Podolia, Vytautas's lifelong lordship, was to return to Poland. Svitrigaila tried to prevent this from happening, and even put Jagiello under house arrest. The confrontation in Podolia and Volhynia almost brought the 2 countries to the brink of war.
