Description

In the first half of the 17th century self-consciousness began to awaken among Ukrainians. The Union of the Churches of 1596, which outlawed the Orthodox, caused discontent among the peasants and most of the local nobility. Although the Orthodox Church was restored in 1632, attitudes toward it remained cool. The peasants were becoming strong, and the number of Cossacks increased. Those Cossacks who were not on the register wanted recognition of their rights. These factors led to numerous Cossack rebellions, the last of which occurred in 1638. From the proclamation of the 'Ordination of the Registered Zaporozhian Host' in 1638, which severely limited Cossack autonomy, came the era of 'golden peace'.

In 1647 a Polish nobleman, Daniel Czaplinski, laid claim to the estate of Bohdan Khmelnytsky, a hundredth in a Cossack regiment. Czaplinski took over Khmelnytsky's estate, killed his son, and married the woman that the widowed Cossack intended to marry. Later Czaplinski accused Khmelnytsky of treason. Unable to prevail in court as well as looking at the connivance of the king, Khmelnytsky resolved to lead the Cossacks in revolt against the Poles. On January 25, 1648, Khmelnitsky reaches the Zaporizhian Sich, and at a Cossack council Khmelnitsky is elected hetman.

The Jews were seen by the Cossacks as henchmen of the gentry and Catholics, so they suffered tangible population losses in Ukraine. Between 20,000 and 40,000 Jews died in the first year of the revolt. According to the Zborow Agreement, the surviving Jews had no right to reside in the lands of the Zaporozhian Host.

Description

Bohdan Khmelnitsky's eldest son, Tymish was a helper and protector for his father. When the hetman campaigned on Moldavia and captured the capital of Iasi, he formed an alliance with the Moldavian ruler Vasile Lupu, for the strengthening of which his daughter Rosanda married Tymish Khmelnitsky. Such an alliance troubled the Transylvanians and the Wallachians, who placed their own prince. Cossacks led by Tymish Khmelnitsky moved in support of Vasile Lupu, who broke through to Suceava. The defense lasted a month, after which Tymish Khmelnitsky died, and the Cossacks concluded a truce with the enemy, leaving Suceava safely.

Description

Russian troops entered Poland in 1654. By the time when Bohdan Khmelnytsky died in 1657, many Cossack elders became dissatisfacted with results of the Pereiaslav Agreement. The Hadiach agreement was signed between representatives of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and Cossacks (represented by Hetman Ivan Vyhovsky and the elders Yurii Nemyrych, architect of the treaty, and Pavlo Teteria). It was designed to elevate the Cossacks and Ruthenians to the position equal to that of Poland and Lithuania in the Union and in fact transforming the Commonwealth into a Polish-Lithuanian-Ruthenian Commonwealth. The territories of Hetmanate became the Grand Principality of Rus', retaining its own laws, a separate treasury and its own army under the Hetman. The Union of Brest was abolished, and the Orthodox was equalized in rights with the Catholics. The Polish Sejm approved the treaty substantially disparate, rejecting the articles about the principality of Rus' and the equality of the churches, which devalued the treaty for the Cossack elite as well.

Description

The Hadiach agreement granted many privileges to Cossacks and thus threatened Muscovy influence over Cossacks, which deeply upset Russian Tsar. However the agreement remained mostly on paper. Lower classes of Cossacks feared reprisals and did not want to return estates of catholic nobility. Soon they revolted against their leaders. War between Poland and Sweden and engagement of Polish forces against Russian troops in Lithuania prevented any significant Polish support and initial successes of Hetman Ivan Vyhovsky could not change the tide. The second treaty of Pereiaslav, which was concluded between son of Bohdan Khmelnytsky, Yuri and Russian tsar was an aftermath of the Hadiach Agreement. This treaty has drastically limited Cossack autonomy.

Description

After the death of Bohdan Khmelnytsky, Ukraine was in a dramatic situation, colloquially nicknamed 'the Ruin'. Under pressure from external enemies and in the flames of internal disputes, the Hetmanate was divided along the Dnieper River in 1663. The Right Bank gravitated toward reconciliation with the Poles, who were aristocratically suspicious of the Ukrainians. The Left Bank counted on the Russians, drawing the Cossacks into increasing dependence. The Truce of Andrusovo of 1667 confirmed the split of the Hetmanate and made the liberation struggle of the Ukrainians extremely difficult. The period of chaos lasted until the election of Ivan Mazepa in 1687, but by this time Ukraine was devastated and the Right Bank was virtually extinct.

Description

Refusal of Yuri Khmelnitsky from the hetmanship in 1663 began a period of division of the Hetmanate. While Pavel Teterya ruled on the Right Bank, a struggle between Ivan Bryukhovetsky and Yakym Somko sharpened for hetmanship on the Left Bank. Loyal to Moscow, Briukhovetsky with his populist statements secured the support of the ordinary Cossacks, while Somko advocated a policy that served the interests of the petty officer. At a council in Nizhyn on June 18th 1663, Briukhovetsky was elected hetman, and soon his opponent was arrested and executed.
